Chinese herbal care: what to expect from a consultation
Chinese herbal medicine is part of the care we offer alongside acupuncture. A consultation starts with you: the concerns you want to address, your health history, and the treatments you already use. Herbs are considered individually, rather than recommended automatically with every acupuncture appointment.
What is traditional Chinese medicine?
Traditional Chinese medicine is a system of care that includes approaches such as acupuncture and herbal medicine. At our practice, it provides a framework for discussing your symptoms and broader health history, while considering your existing diagnoses and healthcare. Acupuncture and herbal products are different treatments; evidence for one does not establish the effectiveness of the other.
What happens in an herbal consultation?
Discuss what brings you in, how long it has been affecting you, and what you hope to improve. Bring questions about how your symptoms relate to daily routines such as sleep, meals and activity. Your practitioner can explain whether an herbal recommendation is appropriate and how it might fit into an individualized care plan.
What should I bring?
Bring the names and doses of your medications and supplements, any known allergies, and relevant medical history. Let your practitioner know about pregnancy, breastfeeding, fertility treatment or upcoming procedures. If more than one clinician is involved in your care, ask how to keep everyone informed.
If herbs are recommended
Ask for a clear explanation of the proposed formula, its ingredients, how to take it, how long to use it and when to follow up. Clarify the cost, product source, expected benefits, possible risks and what to do if you notice an unwanted effect. Do not change prescribed medication on your own.
Natural care, with thoughtful oversight
Natural does not automatically mean safe. Herbal products may have adverse effects, interact with medicines or vary in quality. Research on Chinese herbal products has mixed findings, and effectiveness depends on the product and condition. Discuss suitability with your healthcare professionals and do not use herbs to delay needed medical care.
How to arrange a consultation
Call Katy at 281-789-8970 or Heights at 832-888-2014 and ask which practitioner and appointment type to book for Chinese herbal care. Confirm the location, consultation fee and any separate product costs.
