Pain management
Considering acupuncture for chronic pain? Start with these questions.
Pain can affect work, exercise and ordinary routines. Before booking acupuncture, think about the specific problem you want help with and what a useful change would look like.
Start with your diagnosis and care history
Bring the name of any diagnosed condition, the length of time you have had symptoms, and the treatments you have already tried. Tell your practitioner about ongoing physical therapy or medical treatment so the conversation starts with your whole care plan.
Choose a goal you can describe
“I want to feel better” is understandable, but a more specific goal can help you discuss progress. You might want to sit through a work meeting, walk a familiar distance or turn your neck more comfortably. Ask how the proposed treatment relates to that goal.
Ask how you will review progress
Discuss when you will reassess the plan and what information to track between visits. A brief record of symptoms, activity and treatment response can make that conversation more useful. There is no single appointment count that fits everyone.
Read the condition-specific evidence
Evidence differs across pain conditions. Review our back and neck pain and headache guides, then ask your practitioner how that information applies to your circumstances. New or changing symptoms may need a medical assessment before treatment.
